Yerevan Zoo
The Yerevan Zoo is an environmental, scientific research, and educational-cultural institution in Armenia, dedicated to the protection, breeding, and study of rare and endangered animal species from both local and global fauna. It is situated in the northeastern part of Yerevan, along Myasnikyan Avenue, nestled in a natural ravine and spanning a territory of approximately 35 hectares. The zoo was founded in 1940, and its official public opening took place in May 1941. The primary objective of the institution is the preservation of the wildlife genetic pool, the promotion of ecological education, and the implementation of educational programs regarding biodiversity. The structural layout encompasses open-air enclosures representing various climatic regions, water basins, aviaries, a terrarium, an on-site veterinary clinic, and playgrounds. The landscape integrates mountainous terrain with artificial green zones. The zoo houses hundreds of species, including the Caucasian brown bear, the Armenian mouflon, the leopard, alongside exotic wildlife such as elephants, lions, and tigers. Ongoing infrastructure modernization aims to transition towards bar-free, natural-inspired habitats, providing a safe environment for recreation and educational visits.
