Chkalovka

Chkalovka village is located within the Sevan Municipality of the Gegharkunik Province in Armenia, nestled along the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,930–1,950 meters above sea level, the village features a refreshing alpine climate. It was founded in the first half of the 19th century by Russian Molokan settlers migrating from the Volga, Saratov, and Tambov regions of the Russian Empire, and was originally named Aleksandrovka. The settlement was renamed Chkalovka on April 26, 1946, in honor of the legendary Soviet test pilot and Hero of the Soviet Union, Valeri Chkalov. Local residents primarily engage in agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishing. Due to its scenic lakeside location, pristine environment, and growing hospitality infrastructure—including beachfront resorts and cozy guesthouses—Chkalovka has emerged as a popular destination for ecotourism and summer retreats. Furthermore, the outskirts of the village border the ancient burial mounds of the famous Lchashen archaeological site, significantly enhancing its historical and cultural value.
