Armenian Traditions and Customs
Armenian traditions and customs are the spiritual face of our nation. They date back to ancient times and help us preserve our identity. One of our most important customs is hospitality. For an Armenian, a guest is a messenger of God. When a guest arrives at the home, the host places the best food they have on the table. We have many beautiful traditional holidays that we celebrate with great joy. For example, during Trndez, people light a fire and jump over it so that bad things are burned away and removed. On the Feast of Saint Sarkis, young people eat salty pancakes to see their future partner in a dream. Vardavar is the happiest holiday of the year when everyone pours water on each other and cleanses themselves. Our wedding traditions are also very interesting. During the wedding, the best man is the most important person who always stands next to the newlyweds. Lavash is placed on the shoulders of the bride and groom so that their life will be prosperous and abundant. Their mothers also give them honey so that their words will be sweet. Another good custom of ours is to respect the elderly. In the family, the words of older people are always listened to and accepted as law. A newborn child is not shown to strangers for forty days to protect them from the evil eye. All these customs are passed down from parents to children. They make our lives more colorful and meaningful. When we preserve our traditions, we honor our ancestors and strengthen our roots.
